We’ve included one full review and additional information about several other shoe retailers with a Web presence. In our opinion the most important consideration when purchasing shoes online is the retailer’s return policy.
Although the online selection available from many retailers is dazzling, if your shoe purchase doesn’t fit or if the colors simply don’t work, you need the ability to return your order. The advice we offer, and this applies to most online purchases regardless of the type of product, is to check the return policy before placing an order.
Boasting well over 2 million products in stock, you can find virtually any style in almost every size (and most colors) ready for immediate shipment from Zappos. If it happens that your size is not available you can request to be put on the notification list and they will send you an e-mail when your item is available.
Add great prices, a 110% price protection policy, free shipping, free return shipping with a 365 day return policy and you really can’t go wrong. We have made many purchases at Zappos and we have been more than satisfied.
The shopping experience is as fun as it is practical. “Add to My Favorites” button is great if you want shop several styles, or if you want to shop other sites and return to Zappos later. It only takes a moment to register and use this feature. You can find the favorites button on every product page.
One reason someone might hesitate about making a shoe purchase online would be the sizing. Unless you are ordering an exact style that you currently own (or have tried on at a retail location) it’s hard to be sure of a good fit. On most styles Zappos does list a “Fit Survey” which tells you what percentage of respondents felt the shoe was true to size and width but even with that it’s possible to purchase the wrong size. We have and can tell you that returns are effortless. Zappos includes a pre-paid return shipping label with your order. You can initiate the return process online.
In our opinion, no e-commerce site review would be complete without covering state sales tax. For the most part Internet retailers are currently only required to collect and remit sales tax for items shipped to locations where they maintain a physical presence. For Zappos, that means sales tax will be charged if your order is shipped to California, Kentucky, or Nevada.
Zappos is a member of the BBB Online Reliability Program and is listed as a Consumer Safe Shopping Site. Primarily shoes but they also carry a very good selection of designer handbags, backpacks, watches, jeans, and sunglasses.

They also offer free returns and exchanges. Shoebuy will provide a pre-paid return shipping label. Does not apply to orders shipped to destinations outside of the United States. Returnable items must be unworn so try them on but don’t go outside. We did have one somewhat negative experience with the Shoebuy Order Verification process but overall we do recommend them.

Items can be returned at a Macys store location or shipped back using a pre-addressed shipping label. Check the site for any special guidelines that may apply to your purchase.
